THE COACHING PROCESS
What is coaching?
Imagine a relationship where the total focus is on YOU, on what YOU want in your life, and on what will help YOU achieve it. That is the true coaching relationship.
The objective of coaching is to assess where the client is at present, where he/she wants to be, and close the gap. Coaching is about learning and action. It is focused on the present and the future. Coaching is about discovering your goals, then taking action to achieve them. It is also about discovering who you are and what makes you feel alive and fulfilled. Forward action and learning are integral parts of coaching. Coaching makes clients aware that they are most effective when they are at conscious choice, and gives them tools to make powerful choices in their lives.
Who works with coaches?
When it comes to sports, it is practically a given that all great athletes work with coaches, even Tiger Woods. So it shouldn’t surprise you that, just like famous athletes, highly successful people in many different fields work with coaches as well. But when it comes to this major event called our lives, most people choose to go it alone. Maybe it is time to reconsider your decision and hire a professional coach.
Major corporations like Hewlett-Packard, IBM, and ChevronTexaco hire coaches to work with their managers and executives because it is proven that coaching can improve performance as well as job satisfaction. In fact, over 1/3 of US companies have used coaches to help them meet business objectives and improve performance.
The majority of the people who come to coaching are committed to making specific changes in their lives, and realize that they could use some objective support to help them get the results they want. Coaching provides the objective, non-judgmental support that can accelerate their progress. However, just because we remain objective does not mean that we are not invested in the client’s progress. In fact, we are relentless in our efforts to help our clients get results. Clients view coaching as an investment they are making on themselves, regardless of what the issues may be.
How does it work?
One-on-One Coaching is an on-going partnership between clients and coach. Service is provided on a monthly basis. We request a three month minimum commitment from our clients.
We start off the process by establishing clear expectation of the relationship, and identifying the client’s focus and goals for coaching.
On-going coaching sessions are scheduled a month at a time. The coach sets aside that time specifically for the client. In between appointment, we are available to our clients via email or brief phone calls if a need arises.
Most often coaching is done over the phone. Common options are 3-40 minute sessions or 4-30 minute sessions per month. Different arrangements based on the needs of specific clients can be arranged individually.
During the monthly scheduled sessions, the clients come to the meetings with their agenda and the particular challenges they are facing. The coach leads the discussion with the objective of moving the client towards action to realize the results they want. The coach honors the client’s agenda, but also verifies that the client is on-track based on the client’s stated goals and objectives. The coach keeps the big picture view for the clients, who may sometimes lose sight of that when they are completely occupied by the immediate challenges facing them for the short term.
What can I expect?
The success of the coaching experience depends on both coach and client. Powerful, successful relationships occur when both parties are fully invested in the process. When there is trust between client and coach, and each comes to coaching with a full commitment to put 100% into the process, incredible results can be achieved.
We assume from the start that our clients are naturally resourceful, creative and whole. Our clients do not need to be “fixed”. They are fully functioning individuals who wants to raise the level of fulfillment and impact in their lives. Therefore, the coach is there to probe, challenge, encourage, guide, suggest, and question so that the client can determine the right answers himself.
Most common benefits from coaching include:
- Personal empowerment and learning how to overcome obstacles
- Greater sense of joy and fulfillment
- Clarity of purpose and focus – you know what you truly want
- Higher level of self-confidence and trust in yourself
- Giving up limiting old stories you have told yourself and taking different actions
